Meet your trainer – Natalia Holmes

Written by: Natalia Holmes | First Base Fitness & Physiotherapy | September 4, 2020

Have you always been into health and fitness?

Yes, I have always been active and loved exercise. Growing up I have always played sport. It wasn’t until later in high school that I started running. In grade 10 I did my first half marathon with my dad in Auckland. From there I started getting into long distance running and when I was 18, I did my first full marathon in New York. From there I started doing weight training and completed my certificates in fitness.

What do you enjoy most about being a PT and owning your own gym?

I love so many things about my job. I love that I have been able to meet so many women, many of whom now have become lifelong friends. I love seeing girls who were once strangers become friends outside of First Base and knowing that I helped build that. I love that I see my clients grow confident and strong. I love hearing the success stories of women who have reached their goals or are feeling healthier mentally. There is not much that I don’t enjoy to be honest.

What do you believe contributes to a healthy lifestyle?

Balance. I believe you can’t be 100% healthy unless you have balance and flexibility in your life. I believe we should all eat our vegetables and exercise regularly, but I also believe we should be able to have chocolate and wine in moderation without feeling guilty.

What is your favourite type of training?

During the cooler months I love long distance running and anything outside. For the other months of the year I enjoy strength training. I love feeling strong.

What would a typical day look like for you?

My typical day is:

4 am: wake up

5 am – 9 am: classes/ PT clients

9 am: coffee and walk my dogs

10 am: respond to emails/admin

Lunch time: exercise myself

2 pm – 3 pm: afternoon nap

4 pm – 7 pm: classes/ PT clients

7 pm: dinner with my husband & family

Tell us a bit about your members?

My members are a mixed bag. We have females who are young and old, mothers and daughters, scientists and students. The diversity is what makes it so fun. Each client exercises for different reasons and has different goals but are all under one roof. I have members who have been with us since we started in 2016 who are now part of the furniture and I have fresh faces who are just new to Townsville. They are all amazing!
