High steaks

Townsville’s biggest ever barbecue competition is coming to town in June, and the competition is set to sizzle – just like a juicy steak hitting a hot grill.

Barbecue lovers are firing up for a new event for North Queensland, with Townsville set to host the city’s first ever Australian Barbecue Alliance-sanctioned BBQ competition, the Mike Carney Toyota Townsville Barbecue Battle, on Saturday 22 June.

Event co-organiser Dan Wilschefski says the event, which will run from midday till 9pm at Strand Park, will be a fun day out for all ages.

“This is the first time an event like this has been brought to Townsville,” says Dan. “There is a huge community of people who are interested in low and slow BBQ in the Townsville region, and this is a fun event to bring the whole family down, and maybe pick up some barbecuing techniques for yourself. It’s something new and different, with free entry and loads to do.”

The event will see 20 competing teams, from Brisbane, Sydney, Cairns, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay, Atherton Tablelands and Townsville battle it out across five cooking rounds – chicken, pork (any cut), pork ribs, lamb and the ultimate in low and slow barbecuing, brisket. The stakes are high (or perhaps, the steaks are high), with the title of the first ever Townsville Barbecue Battle champion up for grabs. The teams are a mix of pro and rookie teams, four to six people in each, and will use only the power of wood, fire and smoke to create the best BBQ meat around.

“Event-goers won’t be able to taste the competition food, but there will be food trucks and BBQ stalls, as well as amusement rides for the kids, live music, classic cars on show, rock’n’roll dancing and fireworks at 8pm,” says Dan.

“Celebrity chef Adrian Richardson will be doing cooking demos, and MC-ing a segment at 5pm called Ready, Steady, ‘Cue, where local chef favourite Michael Brine (of A Touch of Salt restaurant) will take on celebrity pitmaster Michael Willcocks in mystery box challenge where they will each need to prepare multiple dishes.”

The Mike Carney Toyota Townsville Barbecue Battle will be held at Strand Park, Saturday 22 June from midday.
