The holiday period is a time for friends, food, festivities and relaxing, but sometimes there is a different silly season cycle. Stress > pig out > make outlandish New Year’s resolutions you never resolve.

Don’t let your holiday indulgences derail all of the hard work you’ve already put in. We all have the best of intentions but can easily fall off that health wagon and lose sight of our goals.

It’s time to put some things in place to make 2018 your best year ever!

1. Nourish your body. Eat the rainbow

The best way to incorporate fresh fruit and veggies into your day to day life is to eat all of the different colours. By covering the whole rainbow, you’re giving your body the best array of foods.

What you eat directly affects your mood and energy levels. It is tempting to live off candy canes and eggnog, but try and keep a well balanced diet to help you perform optimally. This will help your energy levels to keep on with your fitness goals. Still allow yourself to have that small piece of pudding and enjoy it, but be mindful of what you’re eating. Use my three-hour reset rule and remember, 80% nice ninja, 20% naughty!

2. No more excuses

Schedule exercise to be part of your daily routine. Grab yourself a buddy and get moving! You’re more likely to stick to your plan if you have someone right there to check in with. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym, you can do a TIFFXO session or try something new and different; ride a bike, go to a dance class or finally go and do that hike you’ve been thinking about. Make it something you enjoy and you’ll starting seeing those benefits.

3. All about that planning

Make sure your meals are planned and you get into that Sunday arvo prep. Carry healthy snacks in your bag in case snack o’clock hits. Plan further and have some back-up meals in the freezer in case you get caught up and don’t have time to prepare something nourishing and good for you.

4. Keep up the hydration

Just because you’re on a holiday from work doesn’t mean you get to take a break from water. Your body will function better when you’re hydrated and it will help with the temptations of reaching for that cookie or sugary soda. It’s amazing how many times we think we’re hungry when we’re actually just thirsty. If you find water a bit boring, add some lemon or cucumber. Keeping up the water can help recover from muscle soreness and even help those cheeky holiday hangovers.

5. Make your bed every morning

“How does this relate back to my health and fitness goals Tiff?” you ask. Well, there is method to my madness. I’m not talking a full change and washing of sheets. I’m talking straightening up that doona and fixing those pillows. Making your bed is excellent for productivity. If you achieve this first thing in the morning, even though it feels a little trivial, it will set your tone for the day. You have already accomplished one thing! Now onto the next goal.

6. Set those goals

It’s time to set some (realistic) goals. Setting goals helps keep me motivated and keeps me focused with a plan. Write down the things you want to achieve over the holiday period and in 2018 and write down the steps you need to achieve them. Maybe it’s losing those last few kilos or finally running that marathon. Doesn’t matter what it is, write it down, make a plan and stick to it. Remember, baby steps is the name of the game! Nothing great was achieved overnight.
