Taking Townsville North Queensland to the World

Townsville North Queensland businesses need to start thinking beyond their borders. In order to drive economic growth, unlock potential for the broader region and encourage business and industry development, international markets must be explored. But if our region has its sights set on cementing itself as the economic gateway to Asia, then we can’t sit back and expect overseas investors to land in our lap.

As the saying goes, if the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain. It’s time to dust off the passport, Townsville Enterprise is taking the businesses of Townsville North Queensland global. After a highly successful business delegation to Papua New Guinea and a delegation to Singapore fast approaching, Townsville Enterprise is firmly focused on strengthening international trade and investment opportunities for local businesses with neighbouring economies.

Townsville Enterprise is seeking to take advantage of Australia’s developing relationship with our closest neighbours, providing North Queensland business owners with the necessary intelligence, support and insight required to assess opportunities supportive of their own business development ambitions.

The delegations that Townsville Enterprise is facilitating are not just about three or four days in country, and are far from the ubiquitous ‘J’ word. They are striving to assist local businesses to establish a comprehensive strategic roadmap toward the development of an effective export market entry strategy. This strategy is all about targeting tangible business outcomes for those eager to broaden their business horizons outside of Australia. The work undertaken prior to and following each delegation is just as important, if not more so, than the time spent overseas.

“It’s time to think big and step outside of your comfort zone.”

As international air connectivity continues to strengthen in the region, Townsville North Queensland businesses are in the hot seat to tap into markets previously deemed inaccessible. Cross-border trading has never been easier, with markets such as Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Hong Kong at the fingertips of local businesses through greater air connectivity with airlines such as Air Niugini. Strategic aviation attraction agendas have enabled the region’s international business prospects to grow, with direct flight connections now operating between Papua New Guinea and Bali. These flights not only offer economic injection into the region through tourism but provide significant trade and investment opportunities. However, this is just the start.

The recent delegation to Papua New Guinea was a considerable occasion for the region’s business community. The five day program provided clearer channels of communication with PNG businesses and a unique opportunity to explore the market’s potential. Delegates were warmly received by the PNG business community at all meetings and functions across the delegation, expressing a genuine willingness to engage with the Townsville representatives.

PNG presents an enormous opportunity for Townsville businesses. This delegation provided valuable insight into business, trade, tourism and investment opportunities that align with the Townsville North Queensland region’s key business interests. Tourism, property, health and education are also key sectors presenting immediate opportunities for our region. Townsville Enterprise is now working towards building upon the 34 year strong relationship with Port Moresby and providing a platform for local businesses and industry to expand into this market like never before.

Facilitating a strong working relationship with one of the most important middlemen in this equation is what not only makes international delegations feasible, but also successful and seamless. The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) helps and supports Australian businesses to export products and services. Austrade also assists Australian businesses in contributing to national prosperity by succeeding in trade and investment, internationally, and promoting and supporting productive foreign investment into Australia. Most importantly, Austrade provides advice to exporters on prospective markets and opportunities, on-the-ground support in target countries and assistance in sourcing potential investors.

When considering attending a delegation, businesses should also make time to assess their eligibility under the Australian Government’s – Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme. The EMDG scheme is a key Commonwealth Government financial assistance program for aspiring and current exporters. Administered by Austrade, the scheme supports a wide range of industries and can reimburse up to 50 per cent of eligible export promotion expenses above $5,000.

If you are serious about business and investment and exploring opportunities on an international platform, a business delegation may be your next port of call. It’s time to think big and step outside of your comfort zone – the opportunities could be endless.
